Cooler Weather and Grandkids

Ready, Set, Graze!

July 26, 2024 Newsletter

Welcome

We’ve had a little cooler weather this week and it’s best nice. We also had two of our grandkids stay over for a couple days and was able to eat lunch with the rest of the grandkids. It’s always a lot of fun when the grandkids stay but it’s also a lot of fun when their parents pick them up.

I order a laser engraver with the idea of a using a laser engraver to make my ear tags. We have used Z-tags for decades because they stay in our cattle’s ears. However, we use blanks tags and sometimes the numbers fade. As a technology geek, I love the idea of use a laser to engrave Ritchey tags, so my engraver should arrive today. If it goes as planned, I’ll include a picture of the results next week.

Grazing Grass Farmer of the Week

This week’s Grazing Grass Farmer of the Week is Ben Glassen of Glassen Farms and The Good Place Abattoir. Ben shares his journey from backyard quail tractors to managing a diverse array of livestock on Vancouver Island, incorporating innovative grazing techniques that enhance ecological health and community sustainability. Through engaging discussions, Ben highlights the importance of scalability, infrastructure, and community relationships in regenerative agriculture. He also offers practical advice for aspiring farmers, discusses influential resources and emphasizes the value of audiobooks and educational materials in learning sustainable farming methods.

What I’m Listening to

  • I’m currently listening to The 12 Week Year by Brian P. Moran. The overall premise is that we should be using 12 weeks to plan our goals for and not using a year. It’s makes sense to me and I plan to try it out. I’ll let you know how it goes. (Amazon afflicate link: https://amzn.to/3ydXY9H)
